The Naturalization Process

The path to U.S. citizenship for foreign nationals is through naturalization. Most often, foreign nationals obtain citizenship after holding a green card (permanent resident status) for at least five years. Green card holders married to U.S. citizens and green card holders in the military may also be eligible for naturalization. Before applying for Citizenship you must be eligible to apply, the following is a reference of requirements needed to apply:

General Naturalization Requirements :

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a permanent resident (have a green card)
  • Have lived continuously in the U.S. for at least five years
  • Have lived within their state/jurisdiction of residence for at least three months
  • Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last five years
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English
  • Pass a U.S. civics and history test
  • Be a person of good moral character

Becoming a U.S. Citizen through Naturalization:

The naturalization process includes the following steps:

  • Determine Eligibility.
  • Prepare and submit the appropriate forms - N-400, Application for Naturalization.
  • If needed, take biometrics (fingerprinting).
  • Complete interview conducted by USCIS Officer .
  • Receive decision made by USCIS regarding N-400 application form.
  • Receive notice to take Oath of Allegiance.
  • Take Oath of Allegiance to the United States and Understand your rights and duties as a U.S. Citizen.
